A pattern of procrastination

Avoiding the unpleasant

Why you can't make yourself do boring things

You know what needs doing. You simply don't want to experience what comes with doing it.

Some tasks aren't hard. They're just unpleasant. Your brain looks for anything more interesting, and before you know it, the simple thing you meant to do is still on your list. This isn't a willpower problem. It's an aversion problem.

Nothing is unclear and nothing is at stake. The task is boring or distasteful, and putting it off feels better right now than doing it. That relief is what keeps it going.

How the pattern works

The task is clear and doable; the problem is that doing it feels bad now. Putting it off feels better now, so now keeps winning. The question shifts:

From

How do I make myself want to do this?

To

How do I start before the mood arrives?

Your next step

The aim isn't to finish the whole task today — only to make the next move easier to approach.

You might decide now exactly when and where you'll make first contact. For example, 'after coffee, at the kitchen table, I open it.' Starting before the mood arrives is usually easier than waiting for the mood.

A fuller version of the “why” and the “what if it doesn't work” belongs in your results email.

If the path to progress is still unclear

If starting still feels impossible, make the first contact tiny and tied to a specific moment.

Example message:

I'll open the document for five minutes after lunch. No outcome required, just open it.

Treat this as a hypothesis

This pattern fits your answers right now. A questionnaire can't see the full context of your task, your reasons, or your life — take what helps, and leave what doesn't.

Is this actually your pattern?

It might not be. The procrastination test takes five minutes and tells you which of the eight is really holding you back.
