UnstuckUnstuck

A pattern of procrastination

Planning instead of doing

Why you keep planning but never start

Researching, organising and preparing keep you productively busy without requiring the vulnerable step of acting.

Planning feels productive. Research feels productive. But if the actual work keeps getting pushed to 'later,' planning may have become a substitute for doing. The more you prepare, the safer it feels, and the more delayed the real task becomes.

You're not idle. You're producing plans, systems, research. It's real work and it feels like progress. That's exactly why it doesn't stop: the guilt that normally pushes you back to the task never turns up.

How the pattern works

Planning registers as progress, and it is real work, so the guilt that normally pushes you back to the task never arrives. The brake has to come from outside. The question shifts:

From

How do I plan this better?

To

When does planning stop and doing start?

Your next step

The aim isn't to finish the whole task today — only to make the next move easier to approach.

You might name a hard stop time for planning today, then write the one executable step you'll take right after, and when. Planning is real work, so it needs an external brake.

A fuller version of the “why” and the “what if it doesn't work” belongs in your results email.

If the path to progress is still unclear

If the plan keeps expanding, cap it and name the first executable action.

Example message:

I'll spend 20 more minutes on this plan, then stop and do the first step: send the brief outline.

Treat this as a hypothesis

This pattern fits your answers right now. A questionnaire can't see the full context of your task, your reasons, or your life — take what helps, and leave what doesn't.

Is this actually your pattern?

It might not be. The procrastination test takes five minutes and tells you which of the eight is really holding you back.
