UnstuckUnstuck

A pattern of procrastination

Resisting the "should"

Why you resist tasks even when they're not hard

Part of you pushes back because the task feels imposed, obligatory or no longer truly chosen.

When a task comes with a sense of obligation, even one you set yourself, part of you may want to push back. The task itself isn't the problem. The feeling of being told what to do is. This pattern is about reactance, not laziness.

Something shifts when a task becomes an obligation, even one you set yourself. The resistance isn't about the work; it's about the loss of choice. Which is why difficulty has nothing to do with it, and why the usual fixes make it worse.

How the pattern works

Once a task becomes an obligation, resistance becomes the point, even if the work itself is fine. More structure makes it worse because structure is what's being resisted. The question shifts:

From

How do I make myself do this?

To

How do I do this without it feeling imposed?

Your next step

The aim isn't to finish the whole task today — only to make the next move easier to approach.

Consider finding the one part of this you'd genuinely choose to do, and starting there on your own terms. When refusal isn't an option, choice can feel restored by beginning with what actually interests you.

A fuller version of the “why” and the “what if it doesn't work” belongs in your results email.

If the path to progress is still unclear

If every version feels forced, find the part you would genuinely choose.

Example message:

I'm going to start with the section I'm actually curious about, even though it's not the first one in the outline.

Treat this as a hypothesis

This pattern fits your answers right now. A questionnaire can't see the full context of your task, your reasons, or your life — take what helps, and leave what doesn't.

Is this actually your pattern?

It might not be. The procrastination test takes five minutes and tells you which of the eight is really holding you back.
